Zune 3.0 Firmware Bug Squashing
Since the release of the new Zune 3.0 firmware, many people have been feeling ecstatic about the new features now at our fingertips, like games and access to the wireless marketplace from our devices. But it has come to my attention that not everyone has been lucky enough to find the new firmware's experience as enticing as the majority of us, unfortunately.

After talking to many other Zune owners, I've found that they have encountered many small issues with the new firmware. Although I haven't personally come across any such problems, I decided to take a closer look at them anyway. Here are just small sample of the problems brought forward:
"Why haven't I got any games on my Zune!?"
"My song timer stays at 0:00 when I play a song!"
"My Zune keeps freezing after a song!"

Well one thing is for sure, this is not how Microsoft wanted their big firmware update to turn out like. Of course you have to give them some credit because they have listened to the consumers this time and added a lot into the firmware. But you would hope by now Microsoft would have done enough testing prior to release to iron out these bugs. Guess not.

Many of these glitches/bugs do not happen straight away after you update. Sneakily, usually only after the user has used the unit for a period of time will the firmware start to show some cracks.
Until Microsoft releases a patches or a small update these small bugs can be easily fixed with the help of the Zune Software, and I'll be here to help you along the way.

"Why haven't I got any games on my Zune!?"
As I've mentioned before, the Zune is now capable of running games that have either been created by Microsoft, or by hobbiests using XNA Game Studio 3.0. While installing the new firmware you may have missed a small option to install games. Don't worry thought, as they can be installed after the update!
Just connect your Zune to your computer using your sync cable and load up the Zune Software. Then go to Settings in the Top Left hand corner, then choose Device from the menu on the left, then Device Update just below. There is a nice little handy button that you can click that will automatically install two preloaded games Microsoft have released for us: Hexic and Texas Hold' Em. If theses games aren't enough for you you can create your own or check the forums for user created games

"My song timer stays at 0:00 when I play a song !"
However small a detail this may be, it's understandable how annnoying it may be to some people... maybe you like a particular part of the song, or want to skip ahead, or just hate the fact it's stuck, there is a quick and easy way round this.
Connect your Zune up to your Computer using the sync cable and then open the Zune Software. After you have done that look at the top right hand corner of the Software where it says Settings. Click Settings and go to Device, then Device Update, then click "Install Games". No-one, including myself, has any real idea right now why this works, but we assume this must include extra firmware details on top of the games?

"My Zune keeps freezing after playing a song!"
This is a tricky one as this is all down to the user (sorry!). Many users change song within the last couple seconds to another song of their choice. Unfortunatly however, the new firmware doesn't agree with this outrageous behavoiur, and tells you by crashing. This can sometimes end up happening when you don't change song, but before that happens hopefully you will have read this!
Again, a rather simple change to the settings can easily fix this small problem, but again there is no real reason behind it: Resetting the background picture on your Zune seems to do the trick. To do this, you turn on your Zune and go into settings, then display, then background. There should now only be one option which is to reset the background. Click that and the freezing should no longer happen!

Note: With Zune 30's, the background will go back to their original Zune background, with Zune 4, 8, 16, 80 and 120 resetting their backgrounds to plain black.

I hope this fixes any problems you have been having with the new firmware but if not, please head to our forums!
